GROUP HEALTH
We are committed to health insurance for both our commercial customers,
who need group coverage for their employees, as well as the individual
or family that needs coverage.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Most Americans who have health insurance are covered by group insurance
policies through their employers. At some of the nation's larger corporations,
employees even have a choice of plans. Choices are also available to individuals
who must purchase their own medical coverage.
There are no bargains in health insurance. Some areas of
the country have lower premiums that others, but, proportionately to our
incomes, health insurance is quite costly. With the explosive growth of
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Managed Care plans in recent
years, consumers are once again focusing on what care they can obtain
with a low out-of -pocket expense. For example, annual physicals are now
often covered with no or a low charge.
LIFE INSURANCE
The primary purpose of life insurance is family financial protection in
the event of the death of a family member. If you do not need to protect
someone else, you do not need life insurance. Do not buy any life insurance
policy unless you fully understand why you need it and how it works.
LONG-TERM CARE
Contrary to popular belief, there is no coverage for long stays in a nursing
facility or for home health care, even if you were hospitalized before
the need for such care. The only way to have insurance for long term nursing
care is to buy a special LTC policy.
You must be in good health in order to qualify for the coverage. The younger
you are when you buy the plan, the lower the annual cost. The best policies
offer broad coverage for care both at home or in a nursing facility. An
inflation rider can be added to keep the benefit in line with future charges
for nursing care. Also, policies should reimburse for mental conditions,
such as Alzheimer's Disease, as well as physical infirmities. A hospital
stay should not be a prerequisite to collecting benefits under this policy.
LONG-TERM DISABILITY
This is one of the most important coverages you can buy. If you are not
able to work because of an accident or a serious illness, how long can
you afford not to have a paycheck? Financial advisors tell us to have
at least three month's income available in the event of an emergency.
Many of us do not. Being out of work for a two-year illness would probably
wipe out most families.
A long-term disability policy replaces your net income in such an event.
If you pay the premium yourself, the benefits are not taxed. If you are
on a plan at work, try to arrange to have the premium deducted from your
salary so that you would receive your benefits tax free.
